|
|
Julie Fowlis has been attracting a huge amount of well-deserved attention recently around the launch of her stunningly beautiful new album, Cuilidh. She even guested on Radio 4's Woman's Hour last week, and absolutely charming she was too. This morning, I opened my newspaper to find yet another article celebrating her fabulous achievement for Scottish Gaelic song.
But the biggest shock of all was seeing my name, and that of my music writer pal Mike Wilson quoted in the specialist press reviews used in the article! I'm completely over the moon about it, as it is not only recognition for Julie's stunning personal achievement, but also for the specialist folk music press (in this case The Living Tradition Magazine and Folking.com, both of which are driven by total passion for the music and the culture). And it's both fantastic and gratifying to know that the journalists who pull these articles together have used them as resource materials!
Here's the article - I'm celebrating today and don't care who knows it!!!

LOL Janet! That journalist could have picked from any number of reviews, but she picked mine and Mikey's - so she rocks as far as I'm concerned!! I was completely SHOCKED to see my name in the Times (thank goodness it wasn't for the wrong reasons!). Maybe the writer could tell that those reviews were written from the heart. <3 _________________ ~ "Se do cheòl a thogadh m'inntinn..." ~

Hey Debbie, you know what? I was seriously wondering why major newspapers in UK didn't feature some of your your brilliant writing. And now... there you are!!! Congratulations! And, of course, an huge thump up to that journalist as well! _________________ Gabe's MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/gabeit |

Went to see Julie again (first time in 2 years) last night in Southport and it was fantastic. The music was amazing and Julie came out to see everyone at the end.
I'm on such a high and I well recommend if you can getting to one of her concerts on this tour - I'm now going to Kendal on the 14th April as well - was kind of supposed to be moving back to Scotland that day, but as I don't start my new job till the 16th!
The new album just gets better and better with every listen.

Cheers for the thumbs up, Gabe!! Glad you enjoyed the gig Iona, I can't wait to go and see Julie this month.
Anyone see her on the BBC1 programme Sunday AM yesterday morning (the current affairs programme presented by Andrew Marr, mentioned as being a fan in the article above!!)? Julie sang so beautifully. _________________ ~ "Se do cheòl a thogadh m'inntinn..." ~

Going to see Julie at our local Arts Centre (10 minutes walk from home!!!) on Tuesday Wonder if she'll have her band there too? It was at this venue some 14 or so years ago I first saw a very young John McCusker with The Battlefield Band ....my first folk gig ever!!!!!!!! _________________ I intend to live forever. Hi Janet - Julie is touring with a band - her Union Chapel gig included Éamon Doorley, Duncan Chisholm and Tony Byrne. The latter is a very cheeky chap I saw at CC (performing with Dave Munnelly's band), he looked even cheekier on telly yesterday!! I think Joe Rusby has been doing sound too, so that's good. _________________ ~ "Se do cheòl a thogadh m'inntinn..." ~

Thanks Debbie. Did I tell you I was sitting in Glasgow Airport with Julie and the guitar player from her band on my way home from CC? _________________ I intend to live forever. So far, so good. |

I don't think you did, Janet - but how cool!!
BTW, anyone pick up on who's now Jules' agent - Paul Fenn of Asgard?
The name Asgard is interesting - from Norse mythology:
'The walls surrounding Asgard, designed to protect the Gods from the Giants'....
Let's hope he does just that! _________________ ~ "Se do cheòl a thogadh m'inntinn..." ~

Hi Debbie !
Congratulations ! it has been such a great pleasure reading your review, and of course, your name in the newspaper. I was really happy and proud of you.
It would be so nice if one day, you could make a review of me as a singer, you would get the "exclusives".
Janet, what a lucky of you meeting Julie at the airport, what a coincidence.
What a pity, I can´t go to see her. I will have more chances.
I had the chance to say hello to her at the C.C this year, when Andy was talking to her after the gig, she is really kind and nice. In any case, if you see her, give my regards from Josep. A catalonian with a scottish heart and soul.
bye bye
JOSEP
Let´s see if I buy this new cd of Julie Fowlis by internet. |

Thanks Kimberly and Josep!
Well, Josep, just let me know when you've got a gig and I'll come and review it for you with pleasure!! I'm in touch with Julie at the moment regarding a gig booking, and I will pass on your regards to her!
You can read the full review if you like - here it is:
| Quote: | Julie Fowlis
Cuilidh
Shoeshine Records 2007
Julie Fowlis is the gorgeous-voiced Scottish Gaelic singer who quite simply got herself noticed and is now firmly on the ascendant. This captivating second solo release, fresh-sounding, emotional and very sensual, serves to reinforce her appeal. Cuilidh, which means secret hiding place, is the perfect sanctuary for Julie’s graceful voice and captivating songs. Her vocal beauty and her passionate, engaging stage presence are such that the listener doesn’t need to understand the words to be able to enjoy her music – and this is precisely what makes her so appealing and able to set out on a 30 or 40-gig tour with ease. She’s making Gaelic songs accessible by getting ‘out there’ and presenting them in fresh, natural and contemporary settings – and every single track on Cuilidh reflects this imaginative approach.
A couple of years ago, before Julie collected the BBC Horizon Award, she was advised by music pundits to ‘throw in’ a few English-language songs to ensure wider appeal. She happily continues to completely ignore this advice – not a single syllable of English here! Instrumentally, the album sparkles, with beautifully upbeat and emotive contributions from Eamon Doorley, John McCusker, Chris Thile, Mark Kelly, John Doyle, Donald Shaw, Michael McGoldrick and many other high profile musicians. I was delighted to uncover the punchiest, feistiest puirt-a-beul set I’ve heard in ages: Julie’s vocal delivery is nothing short of sensational on Hùg Oiridh Hiridh Hairidh. And nothing defines the character of this recording better than album opener Hùg air a’ Bhonaid Mhòir. Bouzouki, guitar and mandolin underpin so much of this recording, with fiddle, viola, accordion, whistle, bodhrán and uillean pipes providing further musical riches. By way of contrast, the album closes with a beautiful unaccompanied lullaby – revealing Julie’s voice at its most starkly poignant. Most of these enchanting songs are sourced from Julie's native North Uist.
A year or so ago I described Julie’s voice as ‘carrying the songs of the Outer Hebrides with coolest grace.’ This recording only serves to reaffirm that view. Julie continues to present a song tradition that has been handed down to her by Hebrideans including Mary Smith Isa MacIllop, Hugh Matheson, and Catriona Garbutt. She does it sublimely, and this album will delight her admirers. |

HI DEBBIE !
Thank you very much for providing me with your review. I have read it, and you are right in everything you say. In terms of song language, I think that she does not need to sing in other language, if she does not want to.
I do not know when I am going to have a gig. I wish I could, but it is impossible to find a group here in Barcelona, or any project. I am desperate.
If you find something as a singer, must be pop-rock, hard rock, or latin music. It is not the kind of music, I am interested in.
I have very often the idea of going to live in Scotland. Maybe there, I could have much more chances of finding a group or project, or any collaboration. At the moment, I just sing in my singing lesson class.
So, if there is any group that needs a singer, a backvocal. Please, tell me, I would appreciate very much your offer. I like folk, melodic-pop, jazz standard, traditional music. Mainly music with great feeling. If it is necessary I can even try with gaelic. Although I do not have any idea of the language, if someone help me with the phonetics, I will have enough, I think so.
bye bye

Best of luck Josep, you are a very fine singer and your voice is a gift for the people to enjoy!
Speaking of gigs, I so fondly remember the two sessions (Rome and Livorno) featuring me at the bodhran.
I'm in love with the instrument... if only I had about 180 GBP to get a tunable one! _________________ Gabe's MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/gabeit |

Hi Josep - good luck with your dream to be closer to the music you need in your life!
Here's our Andy's fabulous review of the same album, from Songlines Magazine - his recommendation got one of Julie's songs onto the free covermount CD for even more people to enjoy - WTG Andy, keep up the brilliant work!!!!!!:
| Quote: | Julie Fowlis has given Scottish Gaelic song a thrillingly contemporary makeover in this, her second solo album, while remaining true to the musical tradition of her native North Uist. She has made these beautiful songs accessible to a wider world in much the same way Kate Rusby and Eliza Carthy did with English folk song. Fowlis was last year’s recipient of the Horizon Award for best newcomer at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, while this year she was shortlisted for singer of the year. Her voice has continued to develop considerably since her debut album to the excellence it has reached today.
The whole album is high quality throughout, without anything even approaching a weak number: a good half dozen songs are major achievements. Of special note are a ‘Puirt-a-beul’ (mouth music) set which epitomises the Gaelic tradition, a Skye song learned from Flora MacNeil, and one of those marvellously upbeat songs about a memorable boat journey. There’s a sense of balance between faster and slower tempo songs, while a lively set of tunes provides yet more variety. Her accomplished whistle playing seamlessly complements her singing and she is ably backed up by some of the best Celtic musicians around, including Éamon Doorley, John McCusker, Donald Shaw and Michael McGoldrick. It all adds up to the best Gaelic song album I have ever heard.
